Active Community Surveillance-Key to Tuberculosis control among Marginalized Population

Lahar block situated in district Bhind, MP is mostly inhabited by SC/OBC population and is highly vulnerable for tuberculosis. The area is a home to many brick kilns. Due to the brick industry, many tribal and migrants families also live there for work. Keeping in view the presence of vulnerable population, an Active Community Surveillance Unit (ACSU) was established in the area after consultation with the district officials. Mr. Vinay Sharma, our community Volunteer has performed his duties exemplarily in the block. He initiated extensive awareness activities on tuberculosis, its symptoms and motivated people for TB check-up. Vinay also facilitated collection of sputum from PTBPs in the area and their transfer at DMC.  He ensured that the community is well aware about the government benefits like free test and treatment of tuberculosis and DBT of Rs. 500 to TB Patients through Nikshya Poshan Yojna.

Due to his untiring efforts, 232 suspected patients have been tested, out of which 23 were found TB positive. Ten patients have completed their treatment and are cured of Tuberculosis and the rest have successfully completed two stages. His determination and enthusiasm has greatly impacted the lives of the people and has been helpful in achieving results.
