The COVID-19 Vaccine
While strong measures are adopted and progress is made in containing the spread of the COVID-19 virus through better public health interventions, diagnostics and treatments, scientists across the world have accelerated the process to develop a safe and effective vaccine that will break the chain of transmission. Vaccines aim to expose the body to an antigen and provoke an immune response that can block or kill the virus if a person becomes subsequently infected, without causing the disease.
Two vaccines that have been granted emergency use authorization by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in India are Covishield® (AstraZeneca’s vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India) and Covaxin® (manufactured by Bharat Biotech Limited).
